Locul.Uptown is a backpackers/travelers hostel based in Bangalore. I became friends with people who are running it, when I was volunteering at Woke Hostel Arpora, Goa.
I went to Bangalore in November 2019 and stayed at Locul.Uptown for about a month and also volunteered with them. This was by far one of the cleanest hostels I have stayed in India.
Here is detailed account of my experience at Locul.Uptown Hostel.
Rooms & Beds
Rooms in Locul.Uptown are quite spacious and bed layouts give lot of open space to rooms. The hostel has wide array of options for dorms starting from 4 bed dorms to 6 bed and 8 bed dorms with and without air conditioning.
There are small box lockers with each dorm bed and rooms have cupboards/storage trunks in addition to these.
Beds in the hostel are really comfortable in terms of size and quality of mattresses. However, sometimes beds move a bit when you have to climb onto upper bunk, this is bit of an inconvenience but overall the experience of beds and rooms is pleasant.
Some rooms do not get proper sunlight or ventilation, thus get a bit damp but that is usually taken care of at time of housekeeping.
Cleanliness & Washrooms
Overall, Locul.Uptown is very clean, specially washrooms. Washrooms now have wipers which make it easier for guests to keep them dry for others as well. The common washroom on ground floor is also kept clean.
Entire hostel (which is spread out on 2 floors) is cleaned every day by housekeeping staff who are quite thorough with their work.
Hostel has a common kitchen which is also cleaned every morning, but not all guests leave it the way they got it. Personally, I would have liked to have kitchen to be bit more clean and to have better cooking vessels, specially for guests staying for long duration.
Locul.Uptown is conveniently located in a quiet and posh neighborhood of Abshot Layout surrounded by premium hotels including ITC Windsor Manor and Lalit Ashok.
There is direct connectivity to the airport by Aero express buses to the hostel. There is a supermarket at a walking distance. Cunningham Road Main street, with abundant eating out places, is also about 15 minutes walk away.
Locul.Uptown has phenomenal staff. People who handle reception are not only some of the warmest people I have met during my travels, they are also multi talented.
Grace is a gracious hostess and a wonderful artist who makes handmade jewellery, design mandalas, and is pursuing fashion designing alongside her work. If you want to buy handmade Indian Jewellery, do ask Grace to show some of her designs on her Instagram handle (@evies.radosums) and you can place your order with her.
Sonali does beautiful henna art and also shares it with the guests in her spare time.
Deb handles housekeeping responsibilities for the hostel and also is an amazing chef. I can definitely go back to Locul.Uptown for hostel dinners cooked by him.
The hostel has ample common space which perfectly serves the purpose of a community living in hostel. My two favorite places were Balcony on first floor and garden area on ground floor. I had some of the best times and conversations in these places.
The hostel also conducts tip based and some paid walking tours across the city which are definitely not to be missed – Flower Market Tour, Art Tours, Street Food trails, Lakeside Walks, Pub Crawls, Compassion Tour of a Cow Shelter, etc. A blackboard in ground floor common area gives you all information about these or you can simply ask about them at the reception.
There are board games and a small library available in common areas.
One thing that can be improved are in-house activities at the hostel during rainy season or hot summers.
Locul.Uptown practically has almost everything to make your stay comfortable – laundry service, free wi-fi, common functional kitchen, dining area, small cafe, iron and ironing board, small library, board games, air conditioning, attached washrooms, small personal lockers for beds, parking space (outside the gate but safe), access to all modes of transport, etc.
Wi-fi is a bit slow or patchy at times but mostly alright. Mobile signals in the area are weak given that its located at the heart of high security zone in the city. Which in a way is a good thing and also saves you from annoying late night phone calls in dorm rooms (you know what I mean).
Sometimes laundry situation can get tricky when hostel is running at high capacity. This can be better managed with a Laundry register or something to ensure timely availability of clothes so that guests can put them for drying on stands.
The hostel serves free breakfast and has a small cafe with some snacks, juices, and ice teas. Breakfast at the hostel is Ok and has decent amount of variety. Its free breakfast, so can’t complaint much but better flavors would be just amazing.
You can use Zomato or Swiggy, or any other food delivery apps to get your favorite foods delivered right at the hostel.
Value for Money
As I mentioned earlier, hostel has variety of rooms starting from 4 Bed dorm to 8 Bed Dorm with and without air conditioning. Price per bed per night varies from Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 and private rooms are priced between Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2000. All rooms and Beds come with free breakfast and wi-fi. All in all a good value for your money.
- Towels are charged a Rs. 50 as Rent – A standard practice across many hostels in India
- Laundry is charged at Rs. 150 per load
- You can buy a padlock at the reception for Rs. 50
- There are basic snacks for sale at the reception and small cafe which are sold at MRP
I had really beautiful memories at Locul.Uptown and met really wonderful people there who are now very good friends.
